When I Grow Up: The Workshop!

The reason I became a coach was to help creative types figure out what they wanted to be when they “grew up” – whether it was to discover/reclaim a long-lost dream they discounted for all those Grown-Up Reasons (having insurance and a well-stocked 401K, not having to live in our parent’s basement) or to let that dream go and figure out what else they can be passionate about and make money from. Because, in 2006, I was lost. I finally decided to seriously listen to the voice in my head that told me I no longer wanted to pursue a career in musical theater, and it was unacceptable (unacceptable, I say!) to find a “job” or something stable for stability’s sake. I wasn’t optimistic, but I was determined to find something I loved almost as much as performing (because finding something I loved just as much was gonna be impossible, right?) and that could give me those Grown-Up Things I needed. Long story short (you can get the long story long here), I discovered life coaching, and didn’t let the entrepreneurial bent/hippy-dippy stereotype stop me from getting certified and creating a career I love – and saying that I love it is putting it mildly.

March 19, 2010 was my last day in Corporate America, and I have been a Woman of the World (my phrase for “full-time entrepreneur”) ever since. I’ve served as an expert source and contributor for such outlets as Newsweek, Forbes, and Psychology Today; led workshops and seminars at SXSW 2011, the Macauley Honors College at City University of New York and the sold-out Etsy Success Symposium; co-created the kick-ass e-course/workbook The Declaration of You; signed with a literary agent to pitch a book proposal I’m writing; made the same base salary in my first full year as a Woman of the World that I made in corporate America; and coached over 150 creative types to devise the career they think they can’t have, or discover it begin with. Not to be a brag-jerk (yes, that’s a term I just made up), but I totally did all that! I still can hardly believe it.

Now, I’m offering a one-day workshop, meant to take the question of “What do I wanna be when I grow up?” and start giving you some answers. We’ll daydream, we’ll discover – and articulate! – what makes us all amazeballs, we’ll leave with homework and Goal Games and answers and, yes, even spend time drawing with colored pencils and markers (no artistic talent necessary, as illustrated by my self-portrait):

But now I’m getting off-topic. You probably wanna know where and when it’s gonna be, right? Smart. OK, here are The Particulars:

  • Date: Saturday, Oct 29th
  • Time: 11:30a-5p (bring a yummy lunch!)
  • Place: Simple Studios, 134 W.29th St (2nd floor b/t 6th & 7th Aves),  NYC

And without giving away to much, I can promise ya…:

access to a private Facebook group of all the other attendees, so you can have your own community of creatively-minded peeps who have the same goals/challenges as ya (it’s nice to feel like you’re not the only one going through this, and to keep in touch post-workshop, right?)…

…& a Quotable Questionaire to answer pre-workshop that gives ya The Top 8 Questions My Clients Find Most Helpful In Discovering What They Wanna Do When They Grow Up…

…& an articulate Magnificent Manifesto, which is a fancy term that’s really your mission statement-elevator speech-career compass combo. But don’t worry – we’ll tackle yours specifically during our time together so you can use it for your own Vampires (that’s what I call the voices in our heads that suck the good stuff outta us) as well as an answer to The Dreaded Question

…& time to take your daydreams seriously. C’mon, I know you have some Passionate Career Ideas in that purdy head of yours, but have discounted ‘em for one reason or another (or another or another or even, yes, another). It’s time to talk about ‘em for serious already…

…& Q&A / personal coaching time. I’m no dope. Above all of this, I’m a coach who has helped over 150 creative types devise the career they think they can’t have, or discover it to begin with. There’s a reason I’m putting a cap on the number of participants in this workshop, and that’s because I want to guarantee that I’ll answer your questions around your own goals/priorities/challenges/dreams. And I can. So I will…

… & Drawing time! That’s all I’ll say about that. I’ll bring the markers, you leave your censor at home.

… & Personal homework. I might have The Life Coach Police after me if I didn’t make sure you all left with your own personalized homework, and I don’t wanna go to Life Coach Jail. Therefore, you’ll leave making sure you know what you need to do to get to The Next Step in devising/discovering your passionate career.

… & Operation: Creative Career Cheer!, my 57 page rhyming (!!!!) career-change workbook, a $37 value, is given to ya as an automatic download upon registering. If Dr. Seuss collaborated with The When I Grow Up Coach to write a new version of What Color Is Your Parachute?, this would be it. You can check it out here.

You currently can’t work with me personally for less than $132/session. Even my group coaching sessions cost $55/session. I expect the results that you’ll get out of this workshop equate to at least 4 coaching sessions together, if not more. So, you can spend $220 in a group for those 4 sessions or $528 with me one-on-one, or you can….

….invest in When I Grow Up: The Workshop for $97 (and get my rhyming, illustrated career change workbook thrown in for $0 instead of $37. Think of it like a set of steak knives for your career).

(Remember, it can sell out, so don’t be doodlin’ around (as I like to say). Registration will close on 10/24 at 6p Eastern, and all purchases are non-refundable or exchangable, but can be sold and transferred to someone else)

Reserve your spot by clicking on the Yay Workshop! Count Me In! button below, and you’ll instantaneously be sent Operation: Creative Career Cheer! as well as the link to answer The Top 8 Questions My Clients Find Most Helpful In Discovering What They Wanna Do When They Grow Up.

Seriously, we’re gonna have such a blast. I’d love to have you be a part of it.

Wanna know what the last worksheep peeps had to say before you sign up yourself? I thought so! Here ya go:

I.B., New York

“I was feeling somewhat unfulfilled in my current career and wanted a push and some suggestions on how to explore other opportunities. I was hoping that Michelle’s workshop would allow me to walk away with both a renewed energy and a more solid vision for how to pursue my other interests, and my expectations were met. I enjoyed listening to other people describe where they’re going, and I got inspired by their ideas.  I now feel excited about the next steps, as there’s more of a strengthening around goals I already had, but only vaguely defined.

Patty A., New York

“In the last few months I have not been 100% happy at my current job. Someday I would like to work for myself but the thought of going for that goal is so scary, and I lacked direction. As the session went on and Michelle asked me questions, the words came out and it is now a lot clearer and less scary. I’m so grateful to Michelle for all the wonderful advice. Her words gave me courage and inspiration to take the first step in what can be something amazing. She rocked the workshop! It really was perfect.”

Dave W
, New York

“I’m at a very cross-roady place where I feel I need to start taking the reins on where I’m headed, career-wise. Michelle brought humor, fun, and great ideas to the Workshop, and the individual feedback was pretty great. From When I Grow Up: The Workshop!, I gained perspective and ideas to move forward. This was a very positive and great experience for me.”

Stop, alright, I’m blushing already, Geez Louise Louise. This is where I put the Yay Workshop! Count Me In! button again, because My Gut wants you to know that I really really really want you to join us. It’s gonna be amazeballs!

Still unsure as to whether the workshop’s right for you? I totally get it. Hopefully these FAQs will help:

Are you gonna tell me what to do when I grow up? I wish I had special Answer Dust to sprinkle over my clients, but I don’t. And if I did, I’d have to charge $5,000 a session because I can just give you The Answer and send you on your way. As a life coach, I believe that my client is the expert in their own life, & I’m here to help them clarify what it is they wanna do & then acknowledge/support/cheerlead them on! And seriously, it’s the 21st century, & if anyone’s telling you that they’re a career dictionary & can tell you what you should do with your life, run. Fast. I just went to a wedding where the caterer was a pizza firetruck, there’s a dude out there who rents his torso as his career (& was so popular he had to expand to 5 torso-renters!), & then there are the people making 6 figures as lego artists. For reals. So, while I won’t tell ya what to do, I will help you get clear as to what your personal and career values/priorities/skills are (usually they’re overlapping), and help you figure out how to bridge the gap to make it happen. Answer Dust can suck it.

What’s my homework gonna be? Whatever’s still a question mark by the end of the workshop! In the last Workshop, we had someone whose homework was to research the 2 career options that have been spinning around her head for a few months, and to make it a less daunting task we figured out how to make it motivating/fun as well as breaking it down into baby steps.  Someone else in the Workshop struggled with finding time to write, since she was always so drained when she got home each day from work and tended to veg on the couch for hours. Her homework was to bring her laptop to work 2-3 times a week so she could head to a coffee shop and spend a solid hour on her writing before heading home. Another Workshop-per wanted to explore being part of the production end of a film, and his homework was to contact his friends and find a group/class to join where he can get that experience from the ground-up. It all depends on your goals/roadblocks and what you need personally to move ya forward! And let’s admit it: surprises are fun.

How do I know I’d fit in with the rest of the Workshoppers? If you associate with the term”creative”, you’re gonna be in the right place! Even if you’re not an artist in any way, you can be creative “just” in ideas and/or out-of-the-box thinking, and that counts, too. In order to get the most from coaching/this Workshop/me, you also hafta not be scared by positive energy and/or the word “amazeballs”, as I have both of ‘em in spades. Also, you need to feel that it’s more powerful to find your own answers and follow your own path, rather than have someone tell you what to do based on their experiences. If you’re looking for someone to give ya advice, you should go call Yo Mama.

If anything’s been unanswered, then see if it’s part of my FAQ Page. If that’s not doin’ it for ya, then shoot me an email and I’ll get back to ya right quick.

Here’s where I throw up the Yay Workshop! Count Me In! button one last time. And if you’re nervous/excited about it, even better – that means you’re on the right path (I love that feeling)! I must repeat: This is gonna be amazeballs! Click below to join us.
