Bad News (delivered by a happy little ditty)

I’ve been The Bearer of Bad News for about 10 days now, and it’s the worst job I’ve had by far (& I was a 1-800-FLOWERS gift box outside The Today Show at 5a in December!). But one of the first things that popped into my head when the Bad News was delivered to me was:

How am I gonna tell My People (that’s you)?

So, I figured I’d tell you the best way I knew how: by writing an original song on my ukulele. Obviously.

Now, keep in mind that this is the first full-length song I’ve ever written by myself, and it’s about, oh, Bad News. But I mean everything that’s in it, and hopefully it won’t totally bring the room down.

How’s that for a teaser?

More info to come next week, when I get it – but I promise to give it to ya only in relation to my business. While I’ll still continue to be completely honest in my I Quit My Day Job updates and how this affects When I Grow Up, I’ll be focusing – as usual – on posts having to deal with creative careers. I don’t plan on abandoning my clients, writing, or upcoming launches any time soon!

If you’re looking to get more personal info as to how I’m doing and the possibility of insurance-covered C cups, you can follow me on Twitter or friend me on Facebook. And know that, while I might not be able to respond to every comment/email/tweet/love letter, I’m reading them and getting a super full heart over ‘em. Honestly, being The When I Grow Up Coach is a huge bright spot in this currently-sucktastic time, and the love and support I get from My People (that’s you!) has already brought me to tears on more than once occasion. I’m still the luckiest, most loved, most supported lady in all the land, and really everyone: that’s all that matters.

It reminding me that I should have my studio apartment checked too. How did you find out? Sending you love and light and lots of jackrabbit fast healing and bright sunny, worry-free days in 2012! *a

  15. Nicola Says:

Oh……that really was the very worst news I've heard in a long time. That absolutely sucks! Sending you love and prayers for a speedy recovery. xoxoxo

  16. Dutch.British.Love Says:

Leave it to you to deliver the news in so creatively and to make it, um, sort of fun. I am so sorry to hear the news – my mom is going through breast cancer treatment right now so I am right in the middle of second-hand experiencing what it's like, some of the ups and downs and the stuff in the middle. I am sending prayers your way, and lots of love and look forward to updates.

  17. Emily Says:

I am sending YOU a huge, ginormous, bigger than big hug of support while simultaneously dancing in the streamers and confetti that are ALREADY falling in honor of your WELLNESS! I'm sending you light, love, and healing energy (and will continue to do so until your ukelele plays back up to the song "I don't got boob cancer" – sure to be another classic hit, mind you.)

  18. Natalie Says:

Sending so much love and thoughts and prayers your way! You're terribly brave to be approaching it with such an amazing attitude, please know that we're all supporting you and love you very much, and that you don't have to just be brave all by yourself in this uncertain time! You have given so much to all of us, the least we can do is try to be there for you through the bad news!

  19. jessica swift Says:

Michelle, my dearest friend, I TOLD you an outpouring of love was coming your way! LOOK at all these comments! I know you are going to pull through this with no problemo, and I'm here for you for whatever you need. I'll fly to NYC whenever you need me to. :)

Lots of love, and this boob cancer doesn't stand a chance in that boob of yours!!!
    xoxoxo

  20. jessica swift Says:

ps– DUH, your song was amazing. I think I forgot to say that before because it's so obvious. :) You are an inspiration for how to deal with such tough news. xoxo

  21. @arielawonders Says:

Sending lots of warm & healing thoughts your way.

  22. kvictoriasmith Says:

Sucks is right. I have been a lurker on this sight but love the work you do. Recently spoke to Women's group about what motivates and drives a person and how to be grateful. You will get through this and will be stronger for it. It is often the things or people that make us angry that drive us to our best selves, just to prove them wrong. So get angry and kick the crap out of cancer. If there is anything I can do please let me know.

  23. Carolyn Says:

I love you so much and am here for you in every possible way :) . Boob cancer doesn't know who it's messing with. You're going to kick it's butt.

  24. Rhonda Says:

I'm so sorry to hear this, but sending lots of love and healing vibes your way. I like Maggie's idea of writing the "I kicked cancer's ass" song. ;)

  25. Paige Says:

    {HUGS} for you! xo xo

  26. Kerilyn Says:

What to say without coming across as anything other than motivating? Hmm… Well your song is a great DECLARATION of how you are going to take on this challenge. Humor, Wit, Honesty…. a sense of telling the boob cancer to 'bite it!'. Now the question remains how you can keep (and hold) that vibe while you go thru this. I know you're not into the hippie dippie stuff but I have two recommendations (just bear with me) – 1. Borrow 'The Secret' from one of your hippy dippy friends and watch it. (there is a part of the movie that addresses what you're going thru. 2. Borrow the movie "You can heal your life" from another hippy dippy friend and watch. *It also addresses the same situation. You're going to need constant reminders that you WILL get thru this, and to use your gifts to help you at this time. These, in my opinion, are two great reminders.

My heart, my sentiment are with you and Luke right now. You're amazing, m'lady. Truly amazing.
Please continue to tell us what you need.

  27. Kerilyn Says:

And whatever we can do to make your boob cancer video go viral…. we'll do it. (Asks everyone whose reading this… RIGHT EVERYONE??)

  28. @JessicaLNewell Says:

Michelle – you will definitely be in my prayers. Cancer is truly a nasty vampire, eh?

On a side note – I had a dream on Saturday morning in which I told you precisely what all of the grand plans for my business were (which I decided to flip instead of ditch), but when I woke up I could not remember a like of it. So I think this is good news for both of us because I'm pretty sure God is telling that I need to hire you as my career coach in the upcoming 2012 year.

I have a friend whose 27 who just got through treatment for cancer in her legs and my grandmother died prematurely due to brain cancer (after 3 rounds of tumors and a LONG career working it in NYC – a true fighter). All this to say I understand the impact this can have on you and your family. You have a friend in me and if you ever have a break I'd love to meet up for coffee sometime… as long as Manhattan doesn't impolde on us ;)

Hope you have a very restful Hannukkah season and a peaceful New Year…

  29. @daniellexo Says:

  33. The Borrowed Abode Says:

I'm walking around my house, singing 'i've got boob cancer…oh, i've got boob cancer'. Yup. And you know what comes next? Kicking Boob Cancer's Ass – The Musical.

I'm new here, but wanted to send you a cyber hug and know that I'm sending good thoughts your way. My sister went for her very first mamogarm ever last year and had it. It was her first and final mamogram. She had both breasts removed. She told me she couldn't wait to get her boobs cut off, and practically RAN and jumped on the OR table! She laughs when she tells this story. She was always very um, small.. not any more! She got great new big ones!!! :)

  55. Lauren Says:

Michelle, I watched the video this morning but I was waiting in hopes of finding the right words to say. Of course, I should have known it's not the words that matter, but the thought. And today, I've hardly thought of anything else aside from you.

Last week, my journalism mentor, Susannah Breslin, announced that she had stage 2 breast cancer. Hearing about you just a few days later – the universe just isn't fair! You've cheered me on for a quarter of a year. Now, I want to be your cheerleader while you beat this disease!

  56. Bridget Says:

I am wishing you the best in this journey.

  111. Tough (Question) Tuesday: How will you take care of you? | When I Grow Up - Creative Career Coach Says:

[...] Over the past two weeks, I’ve had lots of people take care of me. My husband, always (he can’t escape). My Mom, often (but if she had her way, she’d move in). My bestie, at least once a day (she always checks in).
