Danielle LaPorte Interviews Me (yes, really!) on Quittin’ the 9 to 5
In honor of my super-excitement for the Danielle LaPorte tweetup/party/love-in this Wednesday (are you in NYC? Come join us at 8p at The Brass Monkey!), I’ve decided to make this Danielle LaPorte week here on When I Grow Up – The Blog!
I met Danielle for the first time in Sept 2009 at her group Firestarter session here on the Upper West Side. I was still at my day job and couldn’t see the light at the end of tunnel, and I knew that I worshiped at the Danielle LaPorte alter. Those few hours with Danielle were key in cutting through the “should” clutter, and was also the first time I knew that calling myself The When I Grow Up Coach was gonna freakin’ click (I said, “Hi, I’m Michelle Ward, The When I Grow Up Coach” – by accident! – and everyone laughed and leaned in. BIG sigh of relief). I went home, filmed this video, and started listening to my own damn self regarding my business. Cue the clouds parting, the trumpets blowing, and the gospel choir singing.
So, you can imagine my thrilled-ness when I got an email from Danielle asking if I could interview her as part of her digital FireStarter Sessions. I may or may not have swooned at my door when I read it on my iPhone, and immediately scheduled it for my very first day as a full-time woman of the world/creative career coach. I thought my life was complete when my interview with her wrapped, but she quickly turned the tables and decided to interview me when I told her it was my very first day as an entrepreneur! I’ve actually had this footage for quite a while, but kept it hidden because of the technical issues (see the “Call Recorder Demo” banner at the bottom of the whole video, my tinny sound and fuzzy face, and Danielle’s head getting consistently cut off). Now, I stopped caring. It’s time to take the video out of the closet and show it the light!
Tune in to hear us talk about Clarity Time, dry heaving into trash cans psychosomatically, how I gave the juju to my clients each night after working all day for The Man, how I impressed Danielle when we first met, and even some money talk. Enjoy!

What a great interview. Both you and Danielle are such inspirations! I like your idea that sometimes a person can just take baby steps with the safety net right below them. It's good to know that it doesn't always have to be a leap. Have a beautiful day!

Ah Danielle is so awesome but I'm a little afraid of her too (it's the badassness). Loved hearing this from you – even a few months later. It's fun to hear your enthusiasm and excitement. And also to remember that you were once right where I am. Thanks for sharing!

Michelle! This is so great! Thanks for posting it even if the technical stuff isn't 'perfect' – good inspiration for all of us to JUST DO IT.

@Piper – Thanks so much! And yes, that safety-net-on-the-ground analogy is one of my faves to talk about. It's totally true! There will probably always be a leap – you can't escape that – but it doesn't have to be a BIG HUGE JUMP, if you know what I mean.
@Maggie – Ha! I know what you mean! She can be totally intimidating, partly because of the bad-assness and partly because she's so intense! And so glad that this 8 month old interview was helpful for you! I didn't even think of it in that way.
@Tania – Yup – Perfection can shove it!
